enda is a many faceted development organisation with headquarters in Dakar, Senegal dedicated to development, particularly in Africa but also in South America and Asia with a strong emphasis on human rights, the effective participation of local communities and a bottom-up approach to development initiatives. Twenty-four thematic teams work on different but related aspects of environment and development ranging from urban initiatives to energy and gender. The scope is wide but the mission agenda remains focussed.
enda's stated aims are:
'to work with grassroots groups on the basis of their needs and objectives';
The main enda website contains detailed information on the work and intentions of the organisation as well as numerous documents of interest to academic researchers and to all those interested in development in Africa and the rest of the developing world.
Opportunities for research exist at enda, particularly for those who already have a postgraduate research degree. A good starting point for such enquiries is the head of enda Energie, Youba Sokona who is especially interested in hearing from African scholars who have proven postgraduate research experience and who are interested in development in Africa.
